Cloudburst

One of the exciting things about my live-edge series is that I never run out of ideas. Nature is full of interesting shapes, just waiting to be revealed. In Cloudburst, the swirling grain of the maple burl bubbles up like a cumulus cloud at the interface between neck and body.

In order to make this shape comfortable to play, I fashioned a leg rest from bent and laminated wood; in this case cocobolo rosewood and maple, echoing the rest of the instrument. The neck is a one-piece slab of absolutely perfect cocobolo rosewood (quickly becoming unobtainium) with 622-654mm multiscale. Frets are medium-tall stainless steel and plek-processed as usual.

This unique guitar also sports the first release of my new stacked-humbucker pickups. The bobbins are laser-cut from thin sheets of cocobolo and stacked together, forming a unique all-wood structure. A full wind combined with two powerful alnico 8 magnets make Cloudburst a huge hard-rock monster.

Elsewhere, the bridge, wrap-lock headless tuners, volume knob and even the strap button are made of 3-d printed stainless steel.
